چکیده

Shimada, I., Schaaf, C. B., Thompson, L. G. and Mosley-Thompson, E. Cultural impacts of severe droughts in the prehistoric Andes: application of a 1,500-year icecore precipitation record Late in the sixth century, Andean peoples experienced major cultural upheavals, including a notablesettlement shift of the classic Mochica culture on the northern Peruvian coast. A recently establishedannual precipitation record derived from ice cores from the Quelccaya glacier in southern Peruallows assessment of the possible role of climatic disturbances in northern Peru. Both areas are in thesame tropical climatic regime. A comparison between the archaeological record and the Quelccayadata suggests the Mochica upheaval was conditioned by a series of severe sixth-century droughts, including one of the severest droughts of the past 1,500 years, spanning AD 562 to 594. A 1500-year record of tropical precipitation in ice cores from the quelccaya ice cap, peru.

Two ice cores, covering 1500 years of climatic information, from the summit (5670 meters) of the tropical Quelccaya ice cap, in the Andes of southern Peru, provide information on general environmental conditions including droughts, volcanic activity, moisture sources, temperature, and glacier net balance. The net balance record reconstructed from these cores reflects major precipitation trends ...

9 The Tropical Ice Core Record of ENSO

Ice core records from tropical and subtropical ice caps provide unique information about the chemical and physical character of the atmosphere. Seasonal variations in the chemical composition of the snowfall and amount of precipitation accumulating on these ice caps produce annual laminations that allow these stratigraphic sequences to be dated. The thickness of an annual lamination reflects th...

Spatial Analysis of Meteorological Drought in Iran from 1965 to2003

The present study examined year-to-year variations in areas affected by drought during a period of 39 water yearsin Iran. Ninety-five meteorological stations were chosen to provide near-continuous long-term records, althoughsome data was missing (less than 10%). The missing data points were estimated using a linear correlation methodbetween the reference station with the missing data points and...
